Carpet Beetles

Carpet Beetle Facts

  • Carpet beetles are small (2–4mm) oval-shaped beetles, often mottled with white, brown, yellow, and black scales, giving them a speckled appearance.

  • There are several species in the UK, with the Varied Carpet Beetle (Anthrenus verbasci) being the most common in homes.

  • The larvae (often called “woolly bears”) do the real damage — adults mainly feed on pollen and nectar outdoors.

  • They can survive on a wide range of materials including wool, silk, leather, fur, feathers, and even dead insects or pet hair.

  • Carpet beetles are not dangerous to humans, but they can cause significant damage to clothing, carpets, upholstery, and stored fabrics.

  • They are very common across the UK and thrive in warm, undisturbed areas of homes.

Biology of Carpet Beetles

  • They are small at 2-4mm long.

  • Female carpet beetles lay up to 100 eggs in dark, secluded spots near food sources such as carpets, wardrobes, or under furniture.

  • Eggs hatch in 1–2 weeks, and the larvae feed for several months (sometimes up to a year) before pupating.

  • Larvae are tiny, brown, hairy, and carrot-shaped — they leave behind shed skins that look like small bristly husks.

  • Adult beetles are most active in spring and summer and are strongly attracted to light, which is why they are often seen on window sills.

  • The full life cycle from egg to adult typically takes 6–12 months depending on temperature and food availability.

Signs of Carpet Beetles

  • Small, irregular holes in woollen clothing, carpets, rugs, blankets, or upholstered furniture.

  • Finding tiny adult beetles (especially on window sills, near lights, or around windows) in spring and summer.

  • Presence of shed larval skins (small, hairy, brown casings) in drawers, cupboards, or carpet edges.

  • Fine, powdery debris or “cast skins” accumulating under furniture or in wardrobes.

  • Thin, bare patches or threadbare spots on natural fibre carpets and fabrics.

  • Seeing small clusters of beetles or larvae in dark corners, air vents, or behind skirting boards.

  • They prefer quiet, undisturbed areas and can go unnoticed for a long time until numbers build up.

Carpet Beetle Treatment

Carpet beetles are a common household pest across the UK. While they don’t pose a direct health risk to humans, they can cause significant damage to natural fibres, clothing, carpets, and upholstery if left untreated.

At A Quick Kill Pest Control, we offer a thorough and effective carpet beetle treatment service tailored to your property. Our experienced technicians will:

  • Carry out a detailed inspection to locate all sources of infestation (including hidden larvae in carpets, wardrobes, airing cupboards, and under furniture).

  • Apply targeted, professional-grade treatments that are safe for your family and pets when applied correctly.

  • Treat both adult beetles and the destructive larvae to break the life cycle.

  • Provide practical advice on cleaning, vacuuming, and preventing re-infestation.

Our carpet beetle treatments are always guaranteed, and in most cases, one or two visits are sufficient to resolve the problem.

We use the latest approved methods that are highly effective while remaining mindful of the environment. All our technicians are fully trained, insured, and follow strict industry standards.

Important Advice: Do not attempt to treat a carpet beetle infestation with over-the-counter sprays alone, as they often fail to reach hidden larvae and can make the problem worse in the long term.

If you’ve noticed holes in fabrics, shed skins, or beetles on your window sills, contact us today for a fast, reliable solution.
