Cockroaches

Cockroach Facts

  • Cockroaches are fast-moving, nocturnal insects with long antennae and a distinctive jerky walk. They are one of the most resilient pests we deal with.

  • Adults vary in size from 10–24mm depending on the species (German, Oriental, or American cockroaches are the most common in the UK).

  • They do not fly long distances (though some species have wings), but spread easily through plumbing, boxes, second-hand furniture, and shared buildings.

  • Cockroaches do not transmit diseases directly like some pests, but they are known to spread bacteria such as salmonella and E. coli, and can trigger allergies and asthma.

  • They can survive for several weeks without food and even longer with access to water, making them very difficult to eliminate once established.

  • Infestations have increased across the UK, particularly in urban areas, restaurants, hotels, and blocks of flats.

Biology of Cockroaches

  • Female cockroaches produce egg cases (oothecae) containing up to 40 eggs. German cockroaches can produce several egg cases in their lifetime.

  • Eggs hatch in 1–3 weeks depending on temperature, and nymphs look like miniature versions of adults.

  • The full life cycle from egg to adult usually takes 6–12 weeks under warm indoor conditions.

  • Cockroaches are nocturnal and hide during the day in warm, dark, moist areas near food and water sources.

  • They are strongly attracted to warmth, food residues, and moisture, which is why they thrive in kitchens and behind appliances.

  • Adults and nymphs are extremely hardy and can survive in a wide range of conditions.

Signs of Cockroaches

  • Live cockroaches (most active at night, especially when lights are turned on)

  • Small, dark, granular droppings that look like coffee grounds or black pepper

  • A distinctive musty, unpleasant odour in heavier infestations

  • Shed skins (cast exoskeletons) in hidden areas

  • Egg cases (small brown capsules) tucked into cracks and crevices

  • Grease marks or smear marks along walls and baseboards where they travel regularly

Cockroach Treatment

Cockroaches are one of the most resilient and difficult pests to eliminate and are notoriously hard to treat with over-the-counter products alone.

At A Quick Kill Pest Control, we provide a professional, proven cockroach treatment service tailored to your home or business.

Our experienced technicians will:

  • Conduct a thorough inspection of kitchens, food preparation areas, appliances, and surrounding rooms to assess the full extent of the infestation.

  • Use a combination of professional treatments including targeted gel baits, residual sprays, and fumigation/UVL fogging where appropriate.

  • Advise on essential preparation steps such as decluttering, deep cleaning, and removing food sources.

  • Apply safe, effective methods that target all life stages — eggs, nymphs, and adults.

  • Offer a treatment guarantee to ensure complete eradication.

Important Advice: DIY treatments often spread the infestation further and rarely solve the problem. Professional intervention is strongly recommended for reliable, long-lasting results.
